Local Delicacies: Our Small, Proud Contribution to the Spread of Made in Italy in Europe

made in italy products abroad

Tradition, history, authenticity. Family recipes, quality raw materials, high specialisation. This is what we see when we think and talk about Italy’s gastronomic heritage. A long canvas where great artists of taste meet, influence each other and a little bit mix, a little bit collide with passion, creating a work of inestimable value.

In a country where very different natural landscapes coexist, subject to different climatic conditions, the delicacies provided by the land could only be so rich. Farmers, fishermen, breeders and cheesemakers live those lands, in close contact with the nature that surrounds them, work them with respect, and strive to ensure that their creations succeed in the far from simple task of conveying what they experience daily. This is how typical products are born, or rather unique goodness that constitutes Made in Italy. The authentic one.

Mmmh…no.

Italian regional excellence

And we think, talk and wish. We wish we could export it, the most genuine Made in Italy, throughout Europe. Always with the promise of keeping prices as close as possible to those of kilometre 0.

This is how the idea of Local Delights was born, a section dedicated to the excellence of our land, to typical Italian products, made with tradition and passion by small local producers, who for us are true artists. Not simple products, but authentic flavours. Not brands and labels, but stories and lands. This is what we want to spread, to make known, to savour. Delivering them directly to your home, abroad.

We have decided to immerse ourselves in the biodiversity of Italy’s regional territories to let the rest of Europe discover the gastronomic goodness of our country. We know that among all those valleys, plains, mountains, coasts, rivers and seas are born true precious gems to be served at the table as freshly picked or to be enhanced in complex and genuine recipes. As with wines, each region has its own specialities and we want to select those that are well cared for, so authentic that they are able to encapsulate all the flavours of the land where they are born and then transmit them to every mouthful.

And while we wish and promise, we do. In fact, there are already plenty of goodies you can find in this category. This year has just begun and we have added some of those gems to the shelves of our online supermarket. We are now introducing you to some of these gems, moving from region to region, from landscape to landscape. From tradition to tradition.

  1. Excellence from Umbria
  2. Excellence from Veneto
  3. Excellence from Calabria
  4. Excellence from Puglia
  5. Excellence from Emilia Romagna
  6. Excellence from Campania

Excellence from Umbria

And why not start from the heart of Italy then, Umbria? In the valleys carved out by the rivers, at the foot of the Umbrian Apennines lies the city of Norcia, the home of guanciale. The Umbrian culinary tradition relies heavily on the elements of the earth, among which the truffle stands out.

But this region also boasts a long and envied tradition in pork processing that gives us a delicacy, a prized fat with an intense flavour from the pig’s cheek. The guanciale di norcia is one of this year’s tastiest novelties, and having it abroad is a real boon.

Excellence from Veneto

From the Apennines to the Alps, those of Veneto. Here, uncontaminated nature is enhanced by an unparalleled expanse of forest that allows for a great variety of crops and livestock breeding.

In the midst of this paradise there is a small municipality, Asiago, which gives us two truly unique delicacies: the Asiago cheese of the same name, a PDO product, soft and fresh with a semi-cooked paste, and Rigoni hazelnuts, organic hazelnut creams, tasty and genuine. An excellence already included in our typical products.

Excellence from Calabria

Italy is a land of encounters and contrasts. You can find many of them if you leave the Veneto, travel diagonally from the north-east to one of its south-western extremities, Calabria.

Here the rugged terrain is mirrored to perfection by strong-tasting goodness. We had already told you about the Delizie di Calabria, now you can also order Callipo tuna fillets, a delicacy of the sea enhanced by the centuries-old tradition of the Tonnaroti of Pizzo Calabro

Excellence from Puglia

At about the same height as Calabria, on the opposite side of the coast lies the heel of the boot, Apulia. A land of shepherds and fishermen who can enjoy two seas. Apulian cuisine is distinguished by its simple ingredients.

Like the Altamura lentils, characterised by a different scent and texture from normal lentils, as well as being richer in vitamins and minerals. These are the qualities that have earned Altamura lentils the PGI mark in the European register since 2017. And why not also enjoy some tarallo as an appetiser?

Excellence from Emilia

Going up the peninsula obliquely, from Apulia one stops to rest in the plains, the Emilia region. Here, bold flavours are the basis of the cuisine and change from province to province. Emilia-Romagna gives us many delicacies with IGP and DOC labels that we are proud to deliver fresh.

Starting with mortadella from Bologna, so unique that an entire room in a museum has been dedicated to it. Continuing our journey northwards, we arrive in Modena, where the Balsamic vinegar of Modena IGP originates, then Reggio Emilia, home of Parmigiano Reggiano, and on to Parma where the Prosciutto di Parma DOC comes from.

Excellence from Campania

We conclude (for now) our journey in one of Italy’s most varied lands, Campania. Coasts, reliefs, islands and no less than four volcanoes. This region offers us some of the most famous natural delicacies.

Goodness that needs no introduction, such as Campania’s buffalo mozzarella, Piennolo Pinnerolo cherry tomatoes and Sorrento lemons. And finally the fillets of anchovies from Cetara that can make you look out over the Amalfi coast with every bite.

What we want to deliver directly to your home, to make you feel truly at home. We expats have been and know how important this is.

Fridge counter: fresh delivery as you’ve never seen it before

Some of the products we have told you about today are also part of another section of our online supermarket, the Banco Frigo. Here you can order fresh products such as cold meats and cheeses, or fruit and vegetables, and have them delivered to your home. Fresh and at Italian prices.

We plan to extend fresh delivery to the whole of Europe.

How we delivered fresh in the Netherlands

Thanks to our eco-friendly refrigerated delivery. Fresh products are shipped from Italy to Amsterdam where they are placed in our warehouse.

Freshness is ensured by the means of transport we use. We use transport with refrigerated compartments. The trucks that leave from Italy maintain a temperature between 0 and 4°C. Once the parcels arrive in the Dutch capital, they are delivered on the same day with Cargo Bikes, which are eco-friendly and also refrigerated.

Why in the Netherlands

Because for the moment we have our own warehouse there. Having our own warehouse allows us to guarantee the freshness of our products and thus to keep our promise.

We started the delivery of fresh products in the rest of Europe as well and we are working hard on it to guarantee perfect service.

We hope, we wish and we do. Vico Food Box, Italy at your doorstep.
