The 5 Italian Primates You Should Know

primati italiani

Italy is said to be the country of sun, sea and good food! But that’s not all. It is a winter and summer tourist destination for its artistic beauties, archaeological sites, museums, cities where you can breathe in the history of our days and ancestors. Today we have decided to dwell on at least 5 of the Italian firsts that you should know before going to Italy.

1) The University of Bologna and the Federico II University in Naples

The University of Bologna is the oldest university in the entire West. It has been active since the 11th century and was founded as the founding body of the traditional Studium. The date of its origin was established by a commission chaired by Giosuè Carducci in 1888.

The University of Naples Federico II is also recognized as one of the oldest and most important universities in Italy, especially the first secular university in all of Europe. It came into being in 1224, when the Swabian emperor, king of Sicily, issued the founding edict from Syracuse. The Neapolitan Studium was born with an imperial act since it was necessary to train the ruling groups to govern the state. Giovanni Boccaccio himself and Francesco Petrarch studied in Naples.

2) World leader in the mechanical industry.

Italy has a great tradition in the mechanical industry with about 400 companies and a turnover of well over 9 billion (2018 industry data). The Italian industry is a manufacturer of machine tools, robots, automation with strong customization of the offer and high technological standards, attention to pre- and after-sales service and constant dialogue with the consumer. In Europe, it ranks second immediately after Germany.

3) The highest number of Unesco sites in the world.

Italy is unrivaled on art and culture. Most of the UNESCO-declared World Heritage Sites are located on Italian territory, from north to south, not only works but also real cities that indicate the history of the past and the passage of civilizations. As of 2021 there were already 58 with 31 new inscriptions. UNESCO sites include both the most beautiful landscapes created by nature and the most distinguished works and monuments created by humans.

4) The highest number of PGI, PDO AND TSG awards.

A large proportion of Italian products are listed in the EU register under the acronyms listed above: prosciutto di Parma, prosciutto San Daniele, buffalo mozzarella, parmiggiano regiano, grana padano (and many other cheeses) are identified as PDO (protected designation of origin); mortadella from Bologna, apple Alto Adige, balsamic vinegar from Modena, bresaola from Valtellina, and other cured meats are identified as PGI (protected geographical indication). The acronym STG indicates traditional specialty guaranteed such as Neapolitan pizza and mozzarella cheese. These acronyms have been assigned by the European Union to the most valuable brands and products.

5) Primo produttore di vino al Mondo

Almost one-fifth of the wine produced worldwide comes from Italy, along with Spain, France, the United States, and Australia. Italy is famous for its vineyards and the large territorial areas it dedicates to their cultivation. Among the most popular wines are 77 percent still wines, followed by sparkling wines (12 percent) and semi-sparkling wines (11 percent). The Veneto region is the main producer of wine addirttura doubling its production in 2021, followed by Emilia Romagna, Abruzzo, Lombardy, Tuscany, and Sicily.
