Our white wines: a beginner’s guide

Italian White Wine guide

This article is the second part of our beginner’s guide to wines.
As explained in the introduction of the first part, this article aims to help all those who want to enjoy a bottle of wine and do not know how to choose or distinguish between grape varieties and wineries.

Consistency, smoothness, freshness, acidity, aging, refinement. These are just some that characteristics you should consider when approaching the purchase of a bottle of wine. But if you are not an expert connoisseur of grape varieties and producers, how can you make sure you taste the right one for you? At a restaurant, a good waiter can advise you on the best choice based on what you ordered to eat, but at the supermarket? For your online supermarket, here we are: on-the-go waiters at your service! After our red wine recommendations, we come to your aid with suggestions, descriptions, and comparisons of our whites.

First of all, you should know that, generally, white wines compared to red wines are marked by high acidity, which means that they are less full-bodied (soft) and fresher on the palate.

The characteristics according to which we are going to analyze our whites are 3 and easy to recognize: body, distinguishing between robust, medium and light wines, then sweetness and, finally, alcohol content.

The guide also contains some suggestions on food-wine pairing.

Robust
Perfect for complex appetizers, fish main courses, and even white meats and fish soups. Compared to the other whites we will analyze, robusti are characterized by good smoothness, low acidity and a more intense yellow color.
Among the robust whites we meet Falanghina del Sannio DOC Mastroberardino and Il Lacryma Christi Bianco.

Falanghina is a grape variety that needs a warm climate and from which many fine wines and sparkling wines are produced in Campania. This Falanghina del Sannio DOC Mastroberardino is balanced and without the prevalence of acidity or sweetness. It is of medium persistence and allows one to enjoy fragrances of tropical fruits with every sip.

– 12.5% vol.

Lacryma Christi is one of the wines produced on the slopes of Vesuvius, behind whose name hover history and legend. Lacryma Christi Bianco is soft, round and a little more persistent than Falanghina. It leaves pleasant hints of wild herbs in the mouth even after sending it down.

– 13% vol.

Both of these wines should be served moderately chilled at a temperature between 10 and 12 °C.

Unlike robust whites, these medium-bodied wines have less sweetness, gaining in freshness and lightness. They are best paired with seafood first courses, such as pasta or seafood risottos, but are also excellent with fish main courses and fried foods. Among the best mediums in our e-commerce we suggest Greco di Tufo DOCG Vignole and Albente Feudi di San Gregorio.

Greco is one of Campania’s most renowned grape varieties along with Fiano, both from the Irpinia area and recognized as Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). Greco di Tufo DOCG Vignole is voluminous, on the borderline between a medium-bodied and a robust wine, has light hints of citrus and peach and has good persistence. The value for money is excellent. We recommend serving it at a temperature of 8°C.

– 13% vol.

Albente is a wine produced from the Falanghina grape variety. The Feudi di San Gregorio brand is synonymous with great quality and is always worth its price. Our Albente is a smooth, unflavored wine characterized by a strong flavor.

– 12.5% vol.

This wine is also best served at about 8°C.

Light

Suggested pairing is with delicate fish dishes, grilled vegetables and even snacks. This type of wine is good when enjoyed at lunch or for an afternoon aperitif.
Among the best light white wines reigns Fiano di Avellino. As already mentioned in describing Greco, Fiano di Avellino has been anointed a Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita. Fiano di Avellino Feudi di San Gregorio is dry, with high acidity and hints of chamomile.

– 13% vol.

Very similar is the Fiano DOC Vigne Sannite, same kind of grape variety but different growing area, Sannio Beneventano. More affordable in price, this Fiano is softer and less acidic, this Fiano has hints of pear and fruit in syrup.

– 13% vol.

Serve both at a temperature between 8 and 10 °C.
