The Taralli Napoletani Sugna e Pepe Extra Mandorlati (or, in Neapolitan dialect, taralli ‘nzogna e pepe) are typical Neapolitan savory biscuits, and their uniqueness lies in the combination of the sweet taste of almonds with the spicy flavor of pepper.
These taralli have a very ancient history, dating back to the time when bakers would weave together leftover bread, adding lard and pepper to make biscuits so as not to waste the leftovers. From the 19th century onwards, almonds were added to the classic ‘nzogna e pepe’ taralli, and it is in this form that these Neapolitan taralli are known today.
A classic way to enjoy them is sitting on the cliffs, watching the sea, accompanied by a refreshing cold beer during the summer evenings. But they are also perfect for winter evenings, perhaps after dinner when you feel like munching on something.
