Yogurt, Zymil and Berna Milk and Chocolate: variety and quality for the whole family

In the heart of Emilia, in Collecchio, a company destined to radically change Italians’ relationship with milk was founded in 1961: Parmalat. Established by Calisto Tanzi, the company began as a small dairy but immediately introduced an innovative approach to milk production and distribution, transforming it from an occasional food into a constant presence on family tables. The introduction of Tetra Pak packaging, discovered in Sweden and adopted for the first time in Italy by Parmalat, made possible the creation of long-life milk, marking a historic milestone in the dairy supply chain. In the following years, stood out for its ability to combine tradition and innovation. The launch of UHT milk in 1968 was a turning point, followed by a rapid expansion of the range: yogurt, cream, juices, desserts, and functional products became part of Italians’ everyday life, thanks also to an effective distribution network and memorable advertising campaigns. Today, is part of the Lactalis group but retains a strong identity of its own.

Among its most iconic products is Panna Chef, valued for its creamy texture and versatility in cooking. Used in both savory and sweet dishes, it has won over generations of consumers. Another pillar of the brand’s offer is Zymil, the line of highly digestible lactose-free milk, designed for those with specific nutritional needs or following a lighter diet. This product has successfully responded to changing modern eating habits. For more indulgent moments, offers Berna milk and chocolate, a drink that combines taste and nourishment, ideal for a sweet break during the day, much appreciated by both adults and children. Alongside these products, Milk continues to represent a benchmark for its consistent quality and supply chain traceability. Available in different varieties – whole, skimmed, highly digestible, or the Barista formula for perfect froth – it is designed to meet every need. Yogurts complete the range with options suitable for any time of the day. From whole and creamy versions to low-fat and functional ones, the yogurts stand out for their balance between taste and nutritional value.

The variety of flavors and attention to ingredients reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to research and development. A distinctive feature of  history is its pioneering approach to packaging. From the early use of Tetra Pak, the company has evolved its packaging by focusing on more sustainable materials: FSC-certified paper and cardboard, PET plastic recycled up to 50%, and the planned elimination of PVC by 2025. Concrete goals that are part of a broader environmental strategy aimed at making all packaging recyclable by 2033. Beyond environmental care, is also active on the social front. Its collaboration with the Food Bank for surplus redistribution, support for farmers through the ClassyFarm program, and the adoption of low-impact production systems demonstrate a constant commitment to building an ethical and responsible supply chain. Has also stood out in communication, becoming a media icon in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to memorable advertising campaigns. The brand has built a strong relationship with consumers, becoming part of everyday family life.

It has been called the “Coca-Cola of milk” for its ability to penetrate international markets with a clear and recognizable identity. A little-known fact concerns the birth of the Zymil line: developed in response to the first rising data on lactose intolerance in Europe, it was one of the first products specifically for this target to achieve large-scale success. An intuition that anticipated by years the consumption trends now well established. Today is much more than a historic brand: it is a symbol of the Italian ability to innovate within tradition. Each of its products represents a balance between technology and food culture, bringing to the table an authentic piece of national gastronomic heritage. In everyday cooking, is a valuable ally for both simple recipes and elaborate dishes, helping make each day a little tastier, more mindful, and more connected to the quality of our land.
