Mutti: quality, tradition and innovation in the world of tomatoes

Mutti is the historic company from Parma that since 1899 has been transforming the best 100% Italian tomatoes into preserves loved by consumers and culinary professionals. Thanks to a certified short supply chain and direct relationships with over 400 farming families, the fruits are harvested at the right degree of ripeness and processed within a few hours, preserving their flavor, color, and nutritional values. Among the flagship products are Mutti tomatoes, appreciated for their freshness and authenticity.

Innovation has accompanied every stage of Mutti's journey: from the first tomato concentrate in a tube launched in 1951 to the famous bottled Mutti Passata in 1971, up to the recent “Semplici” ready sauces that enhance the naturalness of the ingredients. Today the range includes Polpa, the smooth Passata, the classic Peeled Tomatoes, the rich Concentrate, the fragrant Datterini, and the versatile Ready Sauces, such as Mutti pasta sauce and Mutti pizza sauce, all made without additives or preservatives. The commitment to quality is reflected in the BRC, IFS and UNI EN ISO 22005 certifications, and in zero residue checks on each batch. Furthermore, with the internal award “Pomodorino d’Oro”, Mutti promotes sustainable farming practices and land protection.

The Story of Mutti

1899

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS

The agricultural company Fratelli Mutti is founded. The founder of “Fratelli Mutti” is Marcellino Mutti (1862–1941), together with his brother Callisto (1870–1936). The family’s agricultural vocation begins its transformation towards an entrepreneurial role. The processing of tomatoes initially stems from the application of artisanal methods, made more efficient year by year: these are the first steps towards the development of the emerging tomato industry.

1951

THE ECONOMIC BOOM TRAVELS WITH THE TUBE!

A great intuition of the Mutti family relaunched the brand of the two lions throughout the country. Thinking of preserving a food product in an aluminum tube is certainly not a novelty today. But in 1951, when only pastes, creams, and toothpastes were found in tubes, the idea of putting tomato concentrate in a tube was truly a revolution, both in the preservation industry and in the habits of millions of Italian families. That idea was discussed during one of the usual family meetings at the Mutti household, brought forward by the enterprising Ugo, who soon gained the support of his brothers to experiment with a new production line dedicated to the concentrate in a tube.

1971

THE MUTTI PULP IS A REALITY

The pulp is born that still today is synonymous worldwide with the "Due Leoni" brand. Ugo Mutti opens the 1970s with a master's touch. His goal is indeed ambitious: to find the solution to obtain a fresh crushed tomato ready to use. After several experiments, finally, through an innovative cold processing method, the Tomato pulp in very fine pieces by Mutti is born—still today the company’s flagship product, appreciated by millions of cooks around the world for its fresh taste and the intrinsic quality of the product. A true poem in the kitchen!

OGGI

CERTIFICATION OF SUSTAINABILITY AND SHORT SUPPLY CHAIN

For Mutti, sustainability is a promise kept every day. From the earth to the table, every step of the supply chain is carefully monitored to reduce environmental impact and enhance the local area. The short supply chain, made up of direct collaborations with selected farmers, ensures tomatoes are harvested at the right level of ripeness, just a few kilometers from the plant. This means more freshness, less waste, more respect for the environment. Because for Mutti, every passata has a story, and that story speaks of quality, responsibility, and love for the land.
