Tuna, salads and seafood specialities ready to eat

Rio Mare was born in the heart of industrial Italy in the 1950s, at a time when eating habits were beginning to change, seeking a balance between practicality, taste, and quality. Its roots date back to 1956, when the production plant was founded in Cermenate, in the province of Como, which still today remains the beating heart of the company. In this place, which has seen generations of canning experts grow, the idea of creating a product that combined reliability and authentic flavor took shape. Over the years, the plant has been constantly renewed, becoming one of the most advanced in Europe in the fish sector. Since 1965, It has been part of the Bolton Group, thus beginning a journey of international growth that would establish it as one of the most well-known and appreciated food brands in the European market. A little-known detail is that Rio Mare's first commercials broadcast in Italy made history for their innovative use of jingles, later becoming iconic with the famous “easy to open, easy to close.”

Over the decades,  has become synonymous with quality and trust, bringing to Italian tables fish processed with care and responsibility. Each can tells a story of attention to the selection of raw materials, certified production processes, and a strong commitment to transparency. The original idea, namely offering a ready-to-eat food true to the Mediterranean diet, has been carried on through a controlled and traceable supply chain. Today, the Cermenate plant employs around 500 people and produces over three million cans every day, exported to more than 40 countries.

Today, the tuna is one of the most recognizable products on supermarket shelves across Europe, thanks to its delicate flavor and firm texture. Each can contains a meticulous selection process, where the fish is processed within hours of being caught and cooked only with salt and water, without preservatives. In addition to the classic version in olive oil, the brand offers a wide range of products such as FAO tuna, which identifies the geographic origin of the catch according to FAO standards to ensure transparency and traceability. Increasing attention is paid to sustainability: pole and line caught tuna represents one of the most environmentally friendly and fish stock-respecting alternatives. In this selection you will also find mackerel, appreciated for its nutritional qualities and versatility in the kitchen, as well as salmon, delicate and rich in Omega 3, perfect for those seeking both taste and wellness in a single product.

Among the most innovative and beloved offerings are the Insalatissime, unique dishes made with fish, legumes, grains, or vegetables, designed for those who want a balanced meal ready to enjoy anywhere. They are also ideal for those following a balanced diet and looking for alternatives to the classic salad. For those who prefer tasty snacks or appetizers, Paté is a delicious and creamy option to spread on crostini or artisanal freselle, available in various flavors. The range is completed by lesser-known but fast-growing options such as Pesto, a condiment that combines the taste of the sea with the tradition of Italian sauces, easily paired with offerings from the sauces category. Some recipes enhance it on whole wheat pasta or grilled vegetables, without weighing down the dish.

Within the assortment, you can also explore typical combinations such as rice and tuna, one of the simplest yet most appreciated pairings in our cuisine. Among the summer offerings, a standout example is the recipe for pasta salad with tuna, perfect for a fresh and balanced lunch. Among the most iconic dishes of the Italian summer, freselle with tuna remain one of the most symbolic, simple, and genuine choices.

A little-known fact concerns the soft pink color of tuna: it is not the result of coloring, but derives from a processing method that preserves the natural characteristics of the fish's flesh. This feature is one of the most recognizable trademarks of the brand, becoming an integral part of its visual identity and advertising imagery over time.

Today, represents a meeting point between the ancient Italian art of canning and the need to meet the demands of conscious consumers, attentive to sustainability and quality. In the kitchen, it has become a versatile ingredient that adapts to numerous preparations: from rice salads to sandwiches, from first courses to light main dishes. Canned tuna, salmon, or mackerel are no longer simple preserves, but true gastronomic elements capable of bringing nutritional value and authentic taste to everyday meals. Their ability to combine practicality with the goodness of tradition makes these products a reliable choice, not only for those seeking quick solutions, but also for those who do not want to give up the pleasure of good food.
