5 ways to recognize an Italian abroad

Be italian

There are many Italians abroad. Sometimes, because of their ways, habits and behaviour, they are thought to be Spanish – and that’s very funny because it happens the same to Spanish people. But how can you recognise an Italian abroad? Today we will suggest you five things to look out for in order to recognise them.

1) Italians are always looking for italian food

The first thing an Italian does when he moves abroad is to look for Italian food. You will see italians going to Italian places, going in search of a good coffee and an authentic pizzeria, whatever it costs and whatever the distance from home. Pizza is life for italians and they can’t live without eating it.

It may happen, especially at the beginning, that Italians are always looking for other Italians to speak their language and not English. Give them time, it will pass!

2) Sunglasses and style

Italians always wear sunglasses, even when it rains. Sunglasses are a real style, a fashion statement. The most popular are Ray-Ban models for men and ‘cat-eye’ glasses for women. Italians distinguish themselves abroad by being fashionable. The big designer labels can be found in Milan and Rome. They dress in colourful clothes that match each other and even the accessories are matched.

3) Tanning

Italians, especially those living in the south, are used to go to the seaside for many months and they suffer a lot from being far away. Already in April, in some Italian regions, it is possible to sunbathe and get a tan. They are so used to being tanned that it becomes like a second skin. But what they can do in winter? get sunlamps!

4) Speaking with gestures

Italians communicate a lot with body expression. When they are happy their faces become cheerful, when they are hesitant their eyes get tangled. When they speak, they move their hands and arms, accompanying each word with a gesture that has a precise meaning.

We give you a piece of advice: don’t argue with Italians abroad. They may gesture in an unkind way.

5) The spirit of the party

The Italian abroad is the one you always recognise: he is the soul of the party, a free spirit. He is the first one who wants to dance, who is not ashamed to sing in front of everyone. The only one who really talks to all the guests and treats them as friends, even if he has only known them for two minutes.
